• ,Joe Buck disclosed in a memoir that his hoarseness in 2011 was because of a hair transplant. Vocal cord injury as a result of a hair transplant? Really? This is strange and not one of the expected hair transplant complications. According to an article in the Seattle Times, Buck reveals in a memoir that his 2011 hoarseness was due to left vocal cord injury during hair transplant surgery. If his vocal cord was injured at a surgery center because of an endotracheal breathing tube, what kind of procedure did Buck have?

Hair transplant surgery is usually done in an office setting with local anesthesia. At most, patients receive an oral sedative, like Valium. Even scalp reduction procedures can be safely performed with local anesthesia. At worst, patients can receive intravenous sedation that does not require endotracheal breathing tubes. So the question comes back to, what procedure did Joe Buck undergo? We may never know the answer.

    Possible hair transplant complications

So what are usual complications after hair restoration surgery? The actual complications will depend on the procedure performed. In general, hair transplant complications are minimal. With any cosmetic surgical procedure, there is the potential for:

    • Pain
    • Infection
    • Bleeding
    • Poor cosmetic result, failure of hair to grow, in grown hairs

Fortunately, hair transplant complications are minimal for most people. Bleeding often responds to pressure. Infections respond to antibiotics, usually not requiring more than one course. Joe Buck required endotracheal anesthesia which brings additional risks. While Buck’s procedure required this type of anesthesia, it is the exception and not the rule. Fortunately, I have never had any vocal cord injury with hair transplants, and because of the usual anesthetic requirement therefore do not expect any.
